There is certain legislation to becoming a Driving Instructor (ADI) and ethics that the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) administers.

The Register of Approved Driving Instructors is administered by the DSA, an Executive Agency of the Department of Transport, under the provisions of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Firstly before training you need:-

  • Held a full licence for at least four years and have no more than 5 points overall.
  • Be a fit and proper person.
  • Able to obtain two Referees when registering with the DSA
  • Read a number plate at 27.5 metres (unless wide then 26.5 metres).*

*If you normally wear glasses or contact lenses this must be worn.

You can enquire with the DSA telephone 0115 901 2500 or fax 0115 901 2820, if you have any queries with regard to the above.

There are three parts to qualify as a Driving Instructor:-

Part I - Theory/Hazard Perception Test (computer based)

  • 100 multiple choice theory questions, with an overall percentage rate of 85. However 80% of the marks in four sections will need to be achieved.
  • Hazard Perception test consists of 14 video clips each containing at least one developing hazard. One clip will contain 2 hazards, you have to identify 15 developing hazards. A Trainee has to score 57 out of a maximum of 75.

Part II - Practical Driving Test (ability to drive – 3 chances to qualify)

  • Approx 1 hour test.

Part III - Practical Driving Test (ability to instruct – 3 chances to qualify)

  • A Trainee has to pass each relevant Part before taking the next.
  • You have two years to qualify from the date a Trainee passes Part I.

At Kingsley’s we have two courses available to suit a Trainees financial circumstances. Either ……

a) Course 1 - pay the whole course in advance and receive the first attempt of each exam fee in relevant section i.e. Part I, II & III exam (once only)

  • Part I £50.00
  • Part II £82.00
  • Part III £82.00

* Increases in ADI Examination fees will need to be met by the Trainee once course started.

b) Course 2 – pay each section of the course as it is completed but Trainee pays for all test fees.

Career Development Loans may be obtained from the relevant source, for which Kingsley’s School of Motoring are registered Learner Providers.

Our courses can be worked around your social and working life. If you are unemployed you may be able to complete a course quite quickly. We are however governed by the DSA test dates.

When you have completed 40 hours on Part III you are able to obtain a Trainee Licence, which would cost the Trainee £125.00 payable to the DSA. The Trainee has six months on this licence to teach pupils and take Part III exam. This is the only way in which a Trainee can be paid by pupils unless qualified and their name is on the DSA Register. The Trainee Licence is issued by the Registrar at the DSA.

A Trainee Licence would lapse if the 3rd attempt has not been passed with the 6 month period.

An extension to a Trainee Licence may be applied for but only granted by the DSA in mitigation circumstances.

Kingsley’s can sponsor your Trainee Licence on a full or part time basis. After you qualify we can offer you a place within Kingsley’s to work as part of our Team, working under a reasonable franchise scheme, for full or part time ADI’s.

An ADI chooses their working hours for flexibility.

An ADI licence will cost £200 (valid for 4 years).
